Prof Bavesh Kana

Bavesh Kana is a South African microbiologist and tuberculosis researcher recognized for contributions to understanding Mycobacterium tuberculosis physiology and treatment response. Affiliated with leading academic and research institutions in South Africa, his work bridges basic mycobacterial biology with translational applications aimed at improving diagnostics, therapeutics, and laboratory capacity in high-burden settings.

His research has advanced the concept of differentially culturable tubercle bacteria as a critical marker of drug tolerance and treatment efficacy, highlighting bacterial subpopulations missed by routine culture. He has also explored strain-specific adaptation among clinical genotypes, immune modulation in TB and SARS-CoV-2 co-exposure, and the development of biomimetic controls and ex vivo models to strengthen infectious disease research.
