Aspro Lisa Ware

Lisa Ware is a cardiovascular public health researcher whose work focuses on hypertension, physical activity, and non-communicable disease prevention in South Africa and other low- and middle-income settings. Her scholarship addresses the growing burden of cardiovascular disease in sub-Saharan Africa, with particular emphasis on awareness, screening, and equitable access to care.

Her publications highlight gaps in hypertension detection and control, especially among young adults and men, and evaluate community-based responses such as task-shifting to community health workers, home-based screening, and national blood pressure campaigns. She has also advanced research on salt reduction strategies, potassium-enriched substitutes, and the integration of physical activity assessment into primary care.

Beyond hypertension, her work extends to cardiovascular health metrics across countries and prevention of type 2 diabetes following gestational diabetes. A consistent strength is the combination of epidemiology, implementation science, and co-created interventions, generating evidence that bridges discovery research with scalable public health action.
