Prof Hellen Myezwa

Hellen Myezwa is a South African physiotherapist and academic leader based at the University of the Witwatersrand. Her scholarship centres on rehabilitation within primary health care, with a strong commitment to health systems strengthening, social justice, and decolonial transformation in professional education. She has played a prominent role in shaping physiotherapy training to align with national and global health priorities.

Her research spans integrated rehabilitation service delivery, user experiences of care, and barriers to physiotherapy access across sub-Saharan Africa and other low- and middle-income contexts. Work in Nepal, Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa highlights system-level determinants, policy implementation gaps, and strategies to enhance workforce capacity and service integration.

Myezwa has also advanced rehabilitation in HIV care, knowledge translation, and community-based models, alongside studies on culturally responsive exercise interventions and quality of life. Across her publications, a consistent strength lies in linking empirical evidence with advocacy, curriculum innovation, and equitable service development.
