Adj Hlengani Chauke

Hlengani Chauke is a South African obstetrician–gynaecologist and academic affiliated with Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital and the University of the Witwatersrand. Her scholarship centres on maternal and reproductive health in resource-constrained settings, with a strong focus on improving quality of care, patient safety, and outcomes in tertiary referral institutions.

Her research addresses emergency obstetric care, postpartum haemorrhage, hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, and neonatal near miss, alongside audits of critical incidents and cancer-related mortality. She has contributed to innovative, low-cost interventions such as suction-based uterine tamponade and has examined adherence to HIV vertical transmission prevention policies, highlighting systems gaps in maternal and neonatal services.

Chauke’s work also explores complex, high-risk pregnancies, including women with prosthetic heart valves and organ transplants, emphasizing multidisciplinary management in low- and middle-income contexts.
