Dr. Andrea Kolkenbeck-Ruh

Andrea Kolkenbeck-Ruh is a cardiovascular and public health researcher based in South Africa, with strong ties to the University of the Witwatersrand and the Birth to Twenty Plus cohort. Her work focuses on hypertension, cardiometabolic risk, and intergenerational cardiovascular health in underserved urban communities, particularly in Soweto.

Her research explores hypertension awareness, screening, and control, highlighting gaps in detection and management among adults and young people. She has contributed to large community-based screening initiatives and implementation studies evaluating home-based assessments, community health worker interventions, and referral pathways to strengthen primary care responses to non-communicable diseases.

Kolkenbeck-Ruh’s publications also examine paediatric hypertension, arterial stiffness, heritability of cardiovascular traits, and the developmental origins of health and disease.
