Dr. Navanthree Govender

Navanthree Govender is a South African researcher focused on community mental health, with particular attention to the intersection of religion and psychiatric care. Affiliated with work conducted in Soweto and published in the South African Journal of Psychiatry, Govender’s scholarship explores culturally grounded determinants of mental health attitudes within Christian communities.

Current research examines how Christian leaders and congregants perceive mental illness, drawing on established attitudinal frameworks to assess stigma, benevolence, and community integration. This work highlights the influential role of faith-based institutions in shaping help-seeking behaviour and advancing collaborative models between churches and mental health services.

Based on the limited publications currently available, Govender’s contributions centre on culturally responsive mental healthcare and community engagement. The research underscores the importance of cross-sector partnerships and context-sensitive strategies to reduce stigma and strengthen mental health support within South Africa.
