Aspro Karl-Gunter Technau

Karl-Gunter Technau is a South African clinician-scientist and pediatric infectious diseases specialist based at the University of the Witwatersrand and the Empilweni Services and Research Unit at Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital. His work is closely linked to the International epidemiology Databases to Evaluate AIDS collaboration, where he contributes to large, multi-country cohort research focused on HIV care in low- and middle-income settings.

His research centers on maternal, infant, and adolescent HIV, including early infant diagnosis, antiretroviral therapy optimization, transition to adult care, and pharmacovigilance in pregnancy and breastfeeding. He has led and co-led influential cohort profiles and implementation studies that strengthened understanding of treatment rollout, drug safety, and service delivery gaps across sub-Saharan Africa.

More recently, his scholarship has expanded to climate-related threats to maternal and neonatal health, integrating epidemiology with biological pathway research. Through systematic reviews, surveillance frameworks, and collaborative data platforms, his work advances equitable authorship practices and evidence-based policy, shaping HIV and maternal-child health programs regionally and globally.
