Dr. Jayati Basu

Jayati Basu is a South African obstetrician–gynaecologist and academic affiliated with the University of the Witwatersrand and district health services in Gauteng. Her scholarship centers on maternal and perinatal health within resource-constrained settings, with sustained engagement in district-level service delivery, clinical governance, and public health research aimed at reducing preventable maternal deaths.

Her publications highlight maternal mortality, adolescent pregnancy, hypertensive disorders, and the impact of COVID-19 on pregnant women in South Africa. Through retrospective reviews and mixed-method studies, she has examined clinical risk factors, perinatal outcomes, and health system responses, including the role of district clinical specialist teams in strengthening maternal care.

Earlier work addressed unsafe termination of pregnancy, obstetric transfusion practices, metabolic disease in HIV, and determinants of antenatal booking.
