Prof Willem Venter

Willem Venter is a South African clinician-researcher and public health leader affiliated with the University of the Witwatersrand, where he leads Ezintsha, a research centre focused on HIV and tuberculosis. Widely recognized for shaping HIV treatment policy in sub-Saharan Africa, his work bridges clinical trials, implementation science, and health systems strengthening in resource-limited settings.

His publications center on optimization of antiretroviral therapy, including transitions to dolutegravir and doravirine, long-acting formulations, and differentiated service delivery models such as community pharmacy distribution. He has contributed influential analyses on weight gain, metabolic effects, and cardiovascular risk in people living with HIV, with particular attention to women and African populations.

Venter’s scholarship also addresses HIV prevention, stigma, and the integration of emerging therapies into public-sector programs.
