Prof Nigel Crowther

Nigel Crowther is a leading researcher in cardiometabolic health and epidemiology, with a strong focus on sub-Saharan Africa. Affiliated with the University of the Witwatersrand, he plays a central role in large collaborative initiatives such as AWI-Gen and HAALSI, integrating clinical, population, and genomic data to address the growing burden of non-communicable diseases in African populations.

His publications highlight major contributions to understanding type 2 diabetes, obesity, dyslipidaemia, hypertension, and peripheral artery disease, alongside the complex interplay between HIV, menopause, and metabolic risk. Through longitudinal cohort studies and policy evaluations, his work has informed public health strategies, including evidence supporting sodium reduction legislation and targeted screening in rural settings.

Crowther’s research also advances genomic discovery in underrepresented populations, identifying novel variants linked to glycaemic traits and emphasizing Africa’s unique genetic architecture.
