Dr. Shaheed Omar

Shaheed Omar is a tuberculosis researcher whose work centers on the molecular epidemiology, diagnosis, and management of drug-resistant tuberculosis, particularly in high-burden settings such as South Africa. His scholarship integrates clinical research, genomics, and public health to address the evolving challenges posed by multidrug- and extensively drug-resistant TB.

His publications highlight major contributions to the development and evaluation of rapid molecular diagnostics, including targeted next-generation sequencing and Xpert-based platforms for comprehensive drug susceptibility testing. Through multicentre clinical studies and systematic reviews, he has advanced evidence for culture-free sequencing approaches and improved detection of resistance to key first- and second-line drugs, including bedaquiline and linezolid.

Omar’s research also explores genotype–phenotype relationships, mechanisms of emerging resistance such as mmpR5-associated bedaquiline resistance, and transmission dynamics. Complementing laboratory innovation, he has examined patient-centered interventions, including conditional cash transfers, to strengthen treatment outcomes.
