Prof Jerome Loveland

Jerome Loveland is a South African academic surgeon affiliated with the University of the Witwatersrand and Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital. A leader in paediatric surgery and transplantation, his work has been central to advancing complex surgical care in resource-constrained settings, particularly through the Wits Transplant Unit in Johannesburg.

His research focuses on paediatric liver transplantation, including living-donor, split-liver and ABO-incompatible procedures, with an emphasis on expanding the donor pool and improving access to care. He has also contributed to studies on renal transplantation risk profiling, oncovascular surgery in children, and outcomes in complex abdominal and hepatobiliary conditions.

Beyond transplantation, his scholarship addresses health systems strengthening, global surgery frameworks, telemedicine follow-up, and emergency paediatric conditions such as intussusception and foreign body aspiration. This body of work reflects a commitment to innovation, service development, and contextually relevant surgical solutions in sub-Saharan Africa.
