School of Therapeutic Sciences

The School of Therapeutic Sciences is a school in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. It brings together six departments: Exercise Science and Sports Medicine, Nursing Education, Occupational Therapy, Pharmacology, Pharmacy, and Physiotherapy.

Its research strengths lie in pharmacology and drug delivery, including antiprotozoal drug design and liposomal and bigel delivery systems, and in neuroscience, with work on neuro-oncology and blood-brain barrier biology. Rehabilitation sciences are a further focus, spanning physiotherapy, occupational therapy and exercise science, alongside HIV care and cardiovascular prevention.

Other themes include public health and health systems, such as pharmacist roles and health worker training, and pelvic health and injury rehabilitation. The published research concentrates on African settings, particularly South Africa, addressing infectious and non-communicable diseases and patient-centred rehabilitation.
