Faculty of Health Sciences

The Faculty of Health Sciences is a faculty at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. It includes six schools (Biomedical Sciences, Clinical Medicine, Oral Health Sciences, Pathology, Public Health and Therapeutic Sciences) and several units and offices, among them the Centre for Health Science Education, the Faculty Research (FRC) unit and the Research Office Health Sciences.

Its main research strengths, as shown in the publication data, are infectious diseases, genomic medicine and public health. Work on tuberculosis resistance modelling and on HIV, vaccine uptake and COVID-19 is prominent, alongside genomic risk prediction in glaucoma and melanoma research in translational and population health sciences.

Further themes include maternal and child health, adolescent health, injury rehabilitation and gender based violence prevention. Studies of femicide risk, neonatal outcomes, sleep health and trauma systems show a policy orientation. The research is focused on South Africa and the wider African context.
