Maternal, Adolescent and Child Health

Maternal, Adolescent and Child Health is a research unit within the Wits Reproductive Health and HIV Institute at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. Established in 1994 as part of a public university research institute, it focuses on advancing sexual and reproductive health, HIV prevention, and youth wellbeing across sub Saharan Africa.

Its publications highlight strong expertise in HIV prevention, contraceptive technologies, and the biological and behavioral effects of injectable contraceptives. Clinical trials and translational studies examine hormonal pathways, genital tract immunity, and antiretroviral pharmacology, generating evidence that informs global guidance on HIV risk and family planning.

The unit also addresses gender based violence, economic hardship, and the social impacts of COVID 19 on youth. Through mixed methods and community engaged research, it shapes policy and programming that integrate biomedical innovation with social determinants of health, strengthening equitable care for women and young people.
