Paediatric Haematology and Oncology

The Department of Paediatric Haematology and Oncology is part of the School of Clinical Medicine in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. It is a clinical department within the school.

Its research strengths lie in paediatric palliative care, paediatric oncology, oncology service delivery, acute toxicology and interprofessional education. Publications include work on mapping palliative care access and on strengthening postgraduate training through reflective, interprofessional learning models.

Further themes include complex surgical referral pathways and the early recognition of serious childhood illness, set within resource-constrained care. The research is focused on South Africa and, in the palliative care work, on access across Africa.
