Neonatology

The Department of Neonatology is part of the School of Clinical Medicine in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.

Its research centres on the outcomes of high risk newborns, with particular strengths in neurodevelopmental follow-up, very low birth weight infants, late preterm birth and hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy. Work in this area includes early developmental assessment, notably the Bayley Scales, and the validation of such measures for local contexts.

Further themes include paediatric infectious disease and child health more broadly, alongside care guidance for resource limited settings in sub-Saharan Africa. The publication record also shows some interdisciplinary work extending into adaptive control systems and materials engineering.
