Paediatrics & Child Health

The Department of Paediatrics & Child Health is a department in the School of Clinical Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.

Its research strengths lie in maternal and child health, infectious diseases and neonatal outcomes. Publication data show work on RSV and SARS-CoV-2 coinfection, vaccine uptake and COVID-19 perceptions, alongside clinical studies of neonatal near miss and hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy.

Further themes include developmental health, early childhood development and adolescent neuroblastoma, with prevention science addressed through digital tools, movement behaviour research and trial harmonisation. The research is focused on South Africa and the wider Southern African region.
