About

The Steve Biko Centre for Bioethics is a department in the School of Clinical Medicine in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.

Its research focuses on bioethics, Afro-communitarian ethics, distributive justice, public health ethics and the decolonisation of global health. Work in the publication data examines vaccine ethics, obligations around genomic feedback, ancient DNA, and the responsibilities of governments and older adults in public health, alongside applied ethics questions such as war as a public health crisis and pharmacist negligence.

Further themes include epistemic justice, African moral philosophy as a basis for normative frameworks, and critical reflection on health, justice and human dignity. The research is chiefly concerned with ethics in African and global health contexts, including the ethics of clinical practice, research and public health policy.
