Emergency Medicine

The Department of Emergency Medicine is part of the School of Clinical Medicine in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. It is a department-level unit within the school, alongside the faculty's other clinical departments.

Its research strengths lie in trauma systems, emergency department quality improvement, critical care and toxicology. Publications cover prehospital interventions, pelvic binders, trauma imaging, antidote availability, oesophageal injury diagnostics and urological injury guidelines, linking frontline clinical problems to evidence-based practice.

Further themes include HIV-related critical illness, infectious disease in intensive care and oncology therapeutics. The work addresses resource-limited and high-burden settings, with clinical guidance and training shaped by practice across Southern Africa.
