Clinical Associates

The Department of Clinical Associates is part of the School of Clinical Medicine in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. It is a department within the school, alongside the faculty's other clinical departments.

Its research strengths lie in the professional identity and workforce development of clinical associates, together with clinical research in cardiovascular risk, renal medicine, critical care and urinary metabolomics. Work on cardiac and metabolic changes in young adults features prominently, alongside studies of opioid substitution therapy retention and end of life nursing.

Further themes include primary care and hospital based health system challenges, with attention to preventative cardiometabolic science. The research is focused on South Africa, where the clinical associate cadre and the health system challenges it addresses are located.
