About

The Department of Radiation Oncology is part of the School of Clinical Medicine in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.

Its research concentrates on oncology, with particular strengths in breast cancer, paediatric Hodgkin lymphoma, bladder cancer and the intersection of cancer and HIV. Work on harmonised treatment protocols and affordable biomarkers runs alongside studies of radiotherapy planning and workflow.

Further themes include radiotherapy innovation, such as artificial intelligence and remote planning, and environmental health and sustainability. The research is focused on South Africa and other resource-limited African settings, where the department studies how evidence-based cancer care can be adapted to local health systems.
