Surgery

The Department of Surgery is part of the School of Clinical Medicine in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.

Its publication profile shows research strengths in hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery, trauma, vascular injury and the management of hepatocellular carcinoma and cholangiocarcinoma, including work on liver resection outcomes.

Further themes include disparities in cancer care, HIV and HBV co-infection in surgical patients, earlier detection and equitable access to curative treatment, and precision oncology approaches such as ex vivo drug sensitivity testing.
