Diagnostic Radiology

The Department of Diagnostic Radiology is part of the School of Clinical Medicine in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. It is a department-level unit within the school.

Its research strengths, as shown by its publications, include diagnostic imaging, artificial intelligence in radiology, musculoskeletal imaging, paediatric imaging and endovascular interventions. Work on automated bone age assessment and forensic imaging also features, alongside attention to population-specific imaging standards.

Further themes include public health and health systems research, with publications addressing gender-based violence and HIV prevention. The research is focused on Southern Africa and on clinical validation within African contexts.
