Orthopaedic Surgery

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is a department in the School of Clinical Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. It is an Orthopaedic Surgery department within the school.

Its research strengths lie in orthopaedic trauma, joint replacement, bone oncology and perioperative medicine. Publications address vascular injuries in knee trauma, complex fractures and tumour-related pathological fractures, and work on thromboprophylaxis in hip arthroplasty and accelerated surgery for hip fractures.

Further themes include bone regeneration, infection control and rehabilitation, including cardiometabolic risk in osteoarthritis, alongside case reports and reviews on rare injuries and emerging infections. The research is focused on South Africa and on resource-diverse clinical settings.
