Dermatology

The Department of Dermatology is part of the School of Clinical Medicine in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.

Its research strengths lie in inflammatory skin disease, particularly psoriasis and atopic dermatitis, with attention to cardiometabolic comorbidity, visceral adiposity and systemic inflammation. Work also covers infectious dermatology, including leprosy, mpox and HIV associated conditions, and biologic therapy in severe atopic dermatitis.

Further themes include complex co-infections and translational research that informs clinical guidelines and public sector practice. The research is focused on Southern Africa, reflecting regional health priorities around neglected and emerging infections and the metabolic risk linked to psoriasis.
