Nephrology

The Department of Nephrology is part of the School of Clinical Medicine in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.

Its research strengths lie in chronic kidney disease, dialysis modalities, kidney transplantation and HIV-associated kidney disease. Studies examine progression risk factors, late referral patterns, quality of life, and the outcomes of peritoneal dialysis in resource-constrained settings.

Further work covers thrombotic microangiopathy, COVID-19 in haemodialysis and complex autoimmune disease. The research is focused on South Africa and Southern Africa, with an emphasis on equitable access to dialysis and multidisciplinary transplant care in high-burden, low-resource environments.
