Paediatric Cardiology

Paediatric Cardiology is a department in the School of Clinical Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.

Its research strengths lie in paediatric heart failure, congenital and acquired heart disease, and rheumatic heart disease, with clinical trials and translational work on novel therapies and echocardiographic and biomarker-based diagnosis. Cardiovascular complications of systemic illness, including sickle cell disease and COVID-19 (MIS-C), also feature.

Further themes include genomic medicine and rare disease diagnosis through clinical exome sequencing, access to cardiac services, and primary hyperoxaluria. The research is focused on South Africa, in the context of resource-constrained settings.
