Anaesthesiology

The Department of Anaesthesiology is part of the School of Clinical Medicine in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.

Its research strengths lie in perioperative safety, paediatric anaesthesia, obstetric anaesthesia and congenital cardiac surgery outcomes, with work on critical events, mortality predictors and regional analgesia techniques. Other themes include enhanced recovery pathways and health systems innovation, such as nurse-led preoperative screening and reduction of anaesthetic drug wastage.

Methodological work spans clinical trials, cohort studies and consensus development, alongside applied laboratory science and attention to environmentally sustainable anaesthesia. Much of the research is focused on South Africa and wider African surgical outcomes collaborations in resource-constrained settings.
