Psychiatry

The Department of Psychiatry is part of the School of Clinical Medicine in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. It is a department within the school, alongside the university's other clinical departments.

Its research strengths lie in community mental health, substance use, HIV comorbidity, sleep disorders and serious mental illness. Work also addresses collaborative care models, stigma within faith communities, mental health literacy among healthcare workers and the policy effects of cannabis decriminalisation, alongside bipolar disorder outcomes, psychotherapy training and the psychosocial dimensions of autism.

Further themes include burnout among rural providers and practical service improvement in resource-constrained settings, with an emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration and equitable psychiatric care. The research is focused on South Africa.
